What are the key things that home movers look for in their estate agent?

Dataloft analyses the results of the Property Academy Home Moving Trends Survey every year and the answers to this question are always hotly anticipated.

The survey goes out to almost 30,000 home movers and really gets under the skin of what people think about the property market and estate agents.

Some of the findings vary considerably from year to year but we find that the top reasons why people choose their estate agent remain reassuringly consistent. To illustrate this point, we brought the findings to life in one of our regular infographics for Dataloft Inform subscribers.

  • ‘Professionalism’ and ‘market knowledge’ top the reasons as to why prospective vendors choose their agents, irrespective of age or how experienced a seller may be.
  • ‘Confidence in an agent’s ability to market my property’ was the most cited reason for choosing an agent, followed by ‘liked and trusted them’.
  • 37% of vendors include ‘pleased with their valuation’ in their top five reasons. This was more prominent among younger and less experienced sellers.

Using these results in your business plan

Many agents take these findings and weave them into the fabric of their business.

I recently showed this infographic to a new agent during a demo and his eyes lit up. He said that it was like looking at a copy of his business plan in visual form - it reassured him that he was heading in the right direction.

As a new player, he knew that it was important to show that he was already knowledgeable about the market and could be trusted with the sale of a client’s property. His first port of call was to ensure that he had access to the latest property market insights that he could easily share with his clients and allow him to prove his expertise.

Give homeowners what they want

There are many ways that an agent can build their reputation and gain the trust of clients. However, if you can incorporate these findings from the survey into your business values, you can’t go wrong.
